Gandhi Mahavidyalaya, Deogaon, Rourkela is a Progressive co-educational institution of higher education. It is situated in the Rourkela Smart city, flanked by N.H. 143 on the Rourkela - Keonjhar Road and well-connected to the key places of the city. It occupies a significant place in the academic firmament of Rourkela. The location of the college, as such, is away from the madding crowd of the steel city and indubitably conducive to the academic ambience.

The idea of having a college in fertiliser township of Rourkela cherished in the minds of the local intelligentsia long before it could become a reality. In the year 1980, a few elders of the locality put their heads together to start a college when they found that demand from the public living in and around the area became a proposition of pressing need. In the process, the local administration also extended necessary co-operation to them.

The College began its academic venture with 64 seats each in I.A & I.Com from the academic session 1980-81 for which affiliation was granted by the Sambalpur University. Subsequently, these seats were increased to 128 from the academic session 1983-84. Initially, the college was started in Gandhi Ucchavidyalaya, Modern India, Rourkela-7. The College was shifted to Deogaon, Rourkela-4 in the year 1989-90 by the initiatives taken by Sj. Rabi Dehury, the then M.L.A. of Raghunathpalli. In the year 1982-83, I.Sc., B.A & B.Com Classes were started with 128, 64 and 64 seats respectively. Govt. Concurrence to these streams were granted subsequently.

The traditional I.A, I.Sc and I.Com courses were replaced by +2 Higher secondary courses from the year 1983. So also the B.A, B.Com and B.Sc courses were replaced by the Three year Degree Courses. So, the College is affiliated to the Council of Higher Secondary Education, Odisha and Sambalpur University for +2 & +3 Courses respectively. B.Sc was opened from the session 1987-88. Subsequently, Honours teaching facilities in Mathematics introduced from the session 1993-94. Physics and Political Science with 16 seats each were introduced from the year 1998-99. The college was granted the permanent Govt. recognition from the academic session 2003-04.

As per the UGC guidelines on introduction of choice Based credit system (CBCS), the college has adopted the CBCS pattern from the current academic session 2016-17and provides Honours teaching facilities in Economics, Education, History, Political Science, Odia, psychology, Hindi in Arts, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Geology, Botany and Zoology in Science and Accountancy in Commerce.

The College aims at all round development of the students by providing opportunities to achieve excellence in all fields. The College has marked its position in the field of Academic Activities, Student discipline, standard of teaching, student -Teacher relationships, sports & Games, NCC, NSS, Youth Red Cross, Red Ribbon Club programmes and also satisfactory performance of students in different examinations.

For the overall development of the college the prodigious contribution of the enterprising Principal, dedicated members of the staff and the president of the Governing Body need much acclaim. The College has ample scope to expand itself to a full-fledged multi-faculty degree college with all amenities within a few years to come.
